Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius
The Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius was founded in the 14th century by St. Sergius of Radonezh, who built a modest wooden church dedicated to the Holy Trinity on Makovets Hill northeast of Moscow. Under Sergius and his successors the community grew into the foremost monastery of medieval Russia, closely tied to the rise of the Muscovite state; tradition holds that Sergius blessed Grand Prince Dmitry Donskoy before the pivotal Battle of Kulikovo in 1380. Over the centuries the monastery accumulated immense spiritual, cultural, and political significance, surviving Tatar raids and a famous sixteen-month siege by Polish-Lithuanian forces between 1608 and 1610.
The walled ensemble is a masterpiece of Russian religious architecture, ringed by massive fortified walls and towers and crowned by structures spanning several centuries. Its centerpiece is the white-stone Trinity Cathedral of 1422, which houses the relics of St. Sergius and once held icons by Andrei Rublev, including the celebrated Trinity. The complex also includes the grand five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition commissioned by Ivan the Terrible, the soaring 18th-century Baroque bell tower, refectory churches, and chapels, together forming one of the finest architectural groupings in the country.
Closed and turned into a museum after the 1917 revolution, the Lavra was returned to the Church in 1945 and remains an active, working monastery home to hundreds of monks. It serves as a leading center of Russian Orthodox theological education, houses the Moscow Theological Academy and Seminary, and functions as a principal pilgrimage destination. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993, it draws large numbers of pilgrims and tourists each year and continues to function as the symbolic spiritual center of the Russian Orthodox Church.
