Transfiguration Cathedral, Khabarovsk
The Transfiguration Cathedral stands on a steep bluff overlooking the Amur River in Khabarovsk, the administrative center of Russia's Far East. Its dramatic hilltop site was reportedly chosen by Patriarch Alexis II of Moscow during a survey of the city. Construction proceeded rapidly between 2001 and 2004, and the finished cathedral was consecrated in 2004 as the seat of the Khabarovsk Eparchy, becoming the spiritual heart of the wider Priamurye Metropolis.
Rising about 96 metres to the top of its cross, the cathedral is widely cited as one of the tallest Orthodox church buildings in Russia, after St. Isaac's Cathedral and the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow. It is built of brick in the Russian Revival style, with a traditional design reminiscent of the work of the nineteenth-century architect Konstantin Thon. The church is crowned by gilded domes, the central dome being the largest and tallest, and its golden cupolas are visible across much of the city and from the river below.
Because the cathedral is a twenty-first-century building, it has no Soviet-era closure or demolition history of its own, though it stands as part of the broad post-Soviet revival of Orthodox church building across the Russian Far East. Today it functions as a working cathedral and a major Khabarovsk landmark, hosting daily services, a Sunday school, church-history classes, and community outreach programs, while continuing fundraising for interior and facade restoration. It draws both worshippers and tourists drawn by its scale and its commanding view over the Amur.
