Toledo Cathedral

The Primatial Cathedral of Saint Mary of Toledo is the principal church of the Spanish Catholic Church, seat of the Primate of Spain, and one of the great High Gothic cathedrals of Europe. Built between 1226 and 1493 on the site of a former mosque, it rises from the dense medieval streets of Toledo, a city celebrated as the meeting place of Christian, Jewish and Muslim cultures, and its architecture absorbs influences from each.

The interior is a treasury of Spanish art across the centuries, from the towering Flamboyant Gothic high altarpiece to the choir stalls carved with scenes of the conquest of Granada. Its most dazzling feature is the Transparente, a swirling Baroque ensemble of marble, bronze and painted figures pierced by an opening in the vault so that sunlight pours dramatically onto the tabernacle. The sacristy hangs with canvases by El Greco, Goya, Titian and Velazquez.

Part of the UNESCO-listed historic city of Toledo, the cathedral remains the spiritual heart of Spanish Catholicism and a destination for those drawn to its layered art and architecture. Its single great tower and broad Gothic facade dominate the skyline of the old imperial capital.
