Strasbourg Cathedral

Strasbourg Cathedral, the Cathedral of Our Lady of Strasbourg, rises in warm pink Vosges sandstone above the half-timbered houses of the Alsatian capital, its lacy single spire soaring to 142 metres. Completed in 1439, it was the tallest building in the world until the nineteenth century and remains one of the supreme achievements of Gothic architecture, its west front a dazzling screen of tracery, statuary and rose window that Goethe likened to a sublime work of nature.

Within, the cathedral guards two extraordinary marvels: a soaring carved pulpit and the celebrated astronomical clock, a Renaissance masterpiece whose figures parade and strike at midday to the wonder of crowds. The building straddled the contested frontier between France and Germany, changing hands repeatedly, and its survival through the bombardments of successive wars is itself remarkable.

Part of the Grande Ile of Strasbourg inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the cathedral remains an active seat of Catholic worship and the emblem of the city. Visitors climb the platform high on the tower for sweeping views across the Rhine plain toward the Black Forest.
