St. Patrick's Cathedral

St. Patrick's Cathedral rises in white marble splendor across from Rockefeller Center on Fifth Avenue, an audacious assertion of Catholic presence built when this stretch of Manhattan was still considered remote. Designed by James Renwick Jr. in the Gothic Revival style and dedicated in 1879, its twin spires soar 330 feet above the street, while inside, soaring ribbed vaults, a great rose window, and dozens of stained-glass windows draw the eye heavenward amid the bustle of the city.

The cathedral seats around 2,400 worshippers and serves as both a working parish church and the ceremonial heart of the Archdiocese of New York. A meticulous multi-year restoration completed in 2015 cleaned the marble, repaired the windows, and brightened the interior, restoring the building to its original luminous grandeur.

As one of New York's most recognizable landmarks, St. Patrick's welcomes more than five million visitors of every faith each year. They come to attend Mass, light a candle at a side altar, admire the Pietà near the Lady Chapel, or simply find a moment of stillness in the heart of one of the world's busiest cities.
