St Patrick's Cathedral, Melbourne
St Patrick's Cathedral is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne and the seat of its archbishop, standing on Eastern Hill at 1 Cathedral Place in East Melbourne. Designed by the English-born architect William Wardell in a Geometric Decorated Gothic Revival style based on 13th-century English models, it was begun in 1858 and consecrated on 1 November 1897, with the spires completed in 1939. Built of locally quarried bluestone, it is the largest church building in Australia and among the largest cathedrals in the Southern Hemisphere.
The cathedral measures about 103.6 metres long, with a central spire rising to roughly 105 metres and flanking spires of about 62 metres. Its dedication to St Patrick reflects the strongly Irish character of 19th-century Catholic Melbourne, the parish having been founded under the colony's first Catholic bishop, James Goold. Pope Paul VI granted the building the status of a minor basilica in 1974, and Pope John Paul II visited in 1986, underscoring its standing in Australian Catholic life.
Inside, seven radiating chapels surround the sanctuary, and the building is noted for its richly detailed Gothic interior, extensive stained glass, a large pipe organ built in the 1960s, and a peal of bells cast in Dublin. As the principal Catholic church of Victoria, it hosts daily Masses, ordinations, state and civic services, and major liturgical celebrations, while remaining open to visitors and pilgrims free of charge throughout the day.
