St. Michael's Cathedral, Qingdao
St. Michael's Cathedral, also called the Zhejiang Road Catholic Church, was built by German missionaries during the period when Qingdao was a German-leased territory. Completed in 1934 to a design by the architect Alfred Fräbel, its two towers rise about sixty metres and are topped with crosses, dominating the skyline of the historic quarter.
Built of granite and yellow brick in a Romanesque style with Gothic touches, it is the seat of the Diocese of Qingdao. Restored after damage during the Cultural Revolution, it is both an active place of worship and one of the city's best-loved landmarks.
