St. Martin's Cathedral (Utrecht / Dom Tower)

St. Martin's Cathedral, commonly called the Dom Church, is the Gothic former cathedral of Utrecht and the only medieval cathedral in the Netherlands, once the seat of the powerful Diocese of Utrecht. Begun in 1254 on the site of earlier churches founded in the eighth century, it was the heart of Dutch Christianity throughout the Middle Ages.

The church is forever linked to its detached Dom Tower, built between 1321 and 1382 and, at 112 metres, the tallest church tower in the Netherlands and the defining symbol of Utrecht. Tower and church were torn apart in a literal sense in 1674, when a freak tornado-like storm collapsed the unfinished nave that joined them; the rubble was never rebuilt, leaving today's open Dom Square between the surviving choir and transept and the freestanding tower.

Following the Reformation the building became a Protestant church, and its interior is now relatively sober, though the medieval cloister, choir and surviving stained glass repay close attention. Visitors climb the 465 steps of the Dom Tower for unrivalled views across the city, while the church below remains in use for worship and concerts, a quietly grand survivor of Utrecht's ecclesiastical past.
