St Mark's Basilica
St Mark's Basilica is the cathedral church of the Patriarchate of Venice and the most famous of the city's churches, standing at the eastern end of the Piazza San Marco. The present structure, consecrated around 1094, was built to house the relics of St Mark the Evangelist, the patron saint of Venice, which according to tradition were smuggled from Alexandria in the ninth century.
The basilica is the supreme example of Italo-Byzantine architecture, its domes and interior surfaces blanketed in golden mosaics that earned it the nickname Chiesa d'Oro, the Church of Gold. Its facade is adorned with marble columns and the famous bronze Horses of Saint Mark, while inside lies the Pala d'Oro, a dazzling altarpiece of gold and gemstones reflecting Venice's wealth and its trading links with the East.
For centuries the basilica was the private chapel of the Doge of Venice and a symbol of the Republic's power and piety, becoming the city's cathedral only in 1807. Today it is a UNESCO-listed treasure and one of the most recognizable buildings in the world, drawing immense crowds to marvel at its mosaics and treasury.
