St. John's Cathedral ('s-Hertogenbosch)

The Cathedral Church of St. John, known in Dutch as the Sint-Janskathedraal, is the largest and most lavish cathedral in the Netherlands and the seat of the Bishop of 's-Hertogenbosch. Built largely between about 1380 and 1530, it is one of the finest examples of Brabantine Gothic architecture in Europe, its honey-coloured stone bristling with pinnacles, flying buttresses and an astonishing population of carved figures.

The cathedral is renowned for the seventy or so stone statues that ride along its flying buttresses, the so-called "buttress figures," depicting craftsmen, musicians and fantastical creatures that seem to climb across the roofline. Inside, the soaring five-aisled nave, the ornate Baroque organ and the richly carved choir reflect centuries of devotion in a city long shaped by Catholic faith, even after the surrounding region turned Protestant.

The painter Hieronymus Bosch, a native of the city, was a member of a confraternity based here, lending the cathedral an extra layer of cultural resonance. After a vast restoration campaign that spanned decades, the building shines again as the spiritual heart of 's-Hertogenbosch and a magnet for visitors drawn to its Gothic splendour.
