St. Ignatius Cathedral, Shanghai
St. Ignatius Cathedral, known locally as Xujiahui Cathedral, is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Shanghai. Completed in 1910 and dedicated to St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits, it was for decades the tallest and grandest Catholic building in the city.
Built of red brick in the French Gothic Revival style, its twin spires rise more than fifty metres above the surrounding streets. Damaged during the Cultural Revolution, when its spires were toppled, the cathedral was carefully restored and reopened for worship, and remains a living heart of Catholic life in Shanghai.
