Siena Cathedral

Siena Cathedral is a medieval Marian church in the Tuscan city of Siena, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. Largely built between the mid-twelfth and mid-fourteenth centuries, it is one of the finest examples of Italian Romanesque-Gothic architecture, its facade and interior banded with distinctive black and white marble, the heraldic colors of the city.

The cathedral is celebrated above all for its extraordinary inlaid marble mosaic floor, created over centuries by numerous artists and considered among the most elaborate of its kind in Italy. It also houses an intricately carved pulpit by Nicola Pisano, frescoes by Pinturicchio in the adjoining Piccolomini Library, and sculptures by Donatello, Michelangelo and Bernini. An ambitious fourteenth-century plan to vastly enlarge the church was halted by the Black Death, leaving the so-called Facciatone as a striking unfinished monument.

A dominant landmark within the UNESCO-listed historic center of Siena, the cathedral remains the seat of the Archbishop of Siena. Its dazzling combination of architecture, sculpture and painted decoration makes it one of the great artistic treasures of Tuscany.
