Salzburg Cathedral
Salzburg Cathedral is the magnificent early-Baroque seat of the Archbishop of Salzburg, dedicated to the city's founding saints Rupert and Vergilius. The present church, consecrated in 1628 to designs by the Italian architect Santino Solari, was among the first great Baroque buildings north of the Alps and set the tone for the harmonious, Italianate cityscape for which Salzburg is famed.
Its marble facade, twin towers and vast domed crossing dominate the cathedral square, while the luminous interior is richly adorned with stucco and frescoes. The cathedral holds a special place in musical history: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was baptized here in 1756 at the Romanesque font that survives from an earlier church, and he later worked as cathedral organist, composing sacred music for its services.
The dome was struck by a bomb in 1944, but the damage was repaired and the cathedral reopened in 1959. Each summer it forms a dramatic backdrop to the Salzburg Festival, when the medieval morality play "Jedermann" is staged in the square outside, binding the cathedral to the cultural life of the city as firmly as to its faith.
