Saint Sophia Cathedral, Harbin

Saint Sophia Cathedral is the largest Orthodox church in the Far East, built by the Russian community that grew up around the Chinese Eastern Railway. The present brick cathedral, crowned by a great green onion dome and flanked by tiered bell towers, was completed in 1932 in the Neo-Byzantine style.

No longer used for worship, it was restored in the 1990s and now houses Harbin's architecture museum, its interior preserved as a cultural landmark. Floodlit at night, it remains the emblem of Harbin and a reminder of the meeting of Russian and Chinese cultures in the north-east.
