Saint Paul's Cathedral, Liège
Saint Paul's Cathedral is the Roman Catholic cathedral of Liege and the seat of the Diocese of Liege. Originally founded as a collegiate church in the 10th century, the present structure was largely rebuilt in the Mosan Gothic style between the 13th and 15th centuries, with a long nave, three aisles, a pentagonal apse and a fine late-medieval cloister.
The church became a cathedral only in the aftermath of the French Revolution: when the great Saint Lambert's Cathedral was demolished in 1795, Saint Paul's was elevated to cathedral rank in 1802, inheriting much of the city's ecclesiastical heritage. Its bell tower, completed in the early 19th century, rises around 90 metres. A mid-19th-century restoration by architect Jean-Charles Delsaux gave the interior much of its present neo-Gothic character.
The cathedral is renowned for its treasury, one of the richest in Belgium, which preserves the gilded reliquary bust of Saint Lambert, a masterpiece of 16th-century goldsmithing, alongside the reliquary of Charles the Bold, manuscripts, textiles and liturgical ornaments. As both a working cathedral and a museum of sacred art, Saint Paul's remains central to the religious and cultural life of Liege.
