Saint Basil's Cathedral

Rising from the southern end of Moscow's Red Square, Saint Basil's Cathedral is perhaps the most instantly recognizable symbol of Russia, its riot of swirling, jewel-toned onion domes appearing almost dreamlike against the Kremlin walls. Commissioned by Tsar Ivan the Terrible between 1555 and 1561 to commemorate the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan, the building is officially the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat. Its design groups nine distinct chapels around a central tented spire, each topped with a uniquely patterned cupola.

The famous polychrome coloring was added gradually, reaching its full glory only around 1683, long after the structure was first raised in white stone. Legend holds that Ivan blinded the architects so they could never create anything to rival it, though historians regard this as folklore. Today the cathedral is administered as a branch of the State Historical Museum, yet it remains a consecrated Russian Orthodox church where occasional services are still celebrated.

Drawing roughly two million visitors annually, the cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Kremlin and Red Square ensemble. Inside, narrow labyrinthine passages connect the chapels, their walls covered in frescoes and floral ornament, offering an intimate counterpoint to the exuberant exterior that has captivated travelers for centuries.
