Sacred Heart Cathedral, Guangzhou
The Sacred Heart Cathedral of Guangzhou, popularly called Shishi ('Stone House'), is one of the few entirely granite Gothic churches in the world and in all of East Asia. Designed by the French architect Léon Vautrin and built between 1863 and 1888, its stone was quarried and dressed by local craftsmen.
With soaring twin towers reaching nearly sixty metres, pointed arches and jewel-like stained glass, it is the seat of the Archdiocese of Guangzhou and a beloved landmark of the city. Restored in recent decades, it continues to serve a large and active congregation.
