Puebla Cathedral
The Basilica Cathedral of Puebla, dedicated to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, dominates the historic center of Puebla, a UNESCO World Heritage city famed for its tiled colonial architecture. Begun in 1575 and consecrated in 1649, with its towers completed later in the century, it is one of the finest examples of Spanish colonial Baroque in the Americas.
The cathedral boasts the tallest bell towers in Mexico, rising nearly 70 meters, and a richly decorated interior of marble, onyx, and gold leaf. The grand high altar, the Ciprés, designed by Manuel Tolsa, stands beneath the central dome, while gilded chapels, a fine choir, and notable paintings adorn the surrounding naves.
Seat of the Archdiocese of Puebla, the cathedral has long been one of the most important religious buildings in the country and appears on Mexican banknotes. It remains an active cathedral and a major attraction in Puebla's elegant historic core, drawing visitors to its soaring towers and opulent Baroque interior.
