Porto Cathedral
Porto Cathedral, the Se do Porto, stands on the highest point of the old city, a massive and fortress-like Romanesque church begun in the twelfth century that has guarded the heart of Porto for some eight hundred years. Its austere, battlemented facade and rose window speak to an age when a cathedral could double as a stronghold, and from its terrace the view sweeps over the tumbling red roofs of the historic Ribeira district down to the Douro river.
Though Romanesque at its core, the cathedral was altered and enriched in later centuries, gaining a Gothic cloister lined with blue-and-white azulejo tilework, a Baroque silver altarpiece and a grand granite loggia designed by the Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni. It was here, in 1387, that King John I of Portugal married Philippa of Lancaster, sealing the long alliance between Portugal and England.
Set within the UNESCO-listed historic centre of Porto, the cathedral remains the active seat of the bishop and one of the city's defining landmarks. It marks the symbolic starting point of the Portuguese Way of the Camino de Santiago, sending pilgrims north toward Galicia.
