Pisa Cathedral

Pisa Cathedral is a medieval cathedral dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, standing at the heart of the Piazza dei Miracoli, the Square of Miracles, in Pisa. Construction began in 1064 and the church was consecrated in 1118, making it the centerpiece of the architectural ensemble for which the surrounding monuments, including the celebrated Leaning Tower, serve as bell tower and baptistery.

The cathedral is the seminal example of Pisan Romanesque architecture, its facade and exterior clad in gray and white marble with tiers of blind arcades and slender columns reflecting the wealth and Mediterranean connections of the medieval maritime republic of Pisa. The interior is famed for its richly carved pulpit by Giovanni Pisano, a Gothic masterpiece, along with mosaics, the tomb of Emperor Henry VII and the swaying lamp that, by tradition, inspired Galileo's studies of the pendulum.

Together with its baptistery, campanile and monumental cemetery, the cathedral forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site that ranks among the most recognizable monumental groups in the world. It remains the seat of the Archbishop of Pisa and a major draw for visitors to Tuscany.
