Orvieto Cathedral

Orvieto Cathedral is a large fourteenth-century cathedral in the hilltop town of Orvieto in Umbria, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Begun in 1290, it was built in part to house the corporal of the Miracle of Bolsena, a relic associated with the establishment of the feast of Corpus Christi.

The cathedral's facade is one of the great masterpieces of the Italian Gothic, a luminous composition of golden mosaics, sculpted reliefs and a great rose window, often described as the finest church front in Italy. Inside, the Chapel of San Brizio holds the celebrated fresco cycle of the Last Judgment by Luca Signorelli, whose vivid, muscular figures profoundly influenced later artists, including Michelangelo.

Rising dramatically above the volcanic tufa cliffs of Orvieto, the cathedral has long been a regional landmark and pilgrimage site connected to the Corpus Christi devotion. Its harmonious striped stonework and richly decorated interior make it one of central Italy's most admired churches.
