Naples Cathedral
Naples Cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, is the principal church of Naples and the seat of the Archbishop of Naples. The present Gothic structure was built largely at the turn of the fourteenth century under the Angevin kings, on the site of earlier basilicas, and has been remodeled and restored many times following earthquakes and changing tastes.
The cathedral is best known as the home of Saint Januarius, or San Gennaro, the patron saint of Naples, whose dried blood is preserved in a richly decorated chapel. Three times a year crowds gather to witness the famous miracle of the liquefaction of the blood, an event of deep significance to the people of the city. The complex also incorporates the early Christian Basilica of Santa Restituta, with an ancient baptistery containing some of the oldest Christian mosaics in the West.
Blending Gothic, Baroque and neo-Gothic elements, with a facade rebuilt in the early twentieth century, Naples Cathedral is a layered record of the city's long religious history. It remains an active center of Neapolitan devotion and one of the most important monuments in southern Italy.
