Montserrat Abbey

Santa Maria de Montserrat is a Benedictine abbey perched high amid the dramatic serrated rock pinnacles of the Montserrat massif in Catalonia, from which it takes its name, meaning serrated mountain. Founded in 1025, it became one of the most important spiritual centres of Catalonia and the home of the revered image of the Virgin of Montserrat, the Black Madonna affectionately known as La Moreneta, whom pilgrims queue to touch and who is honoured as patron saint of the region.

The abbey is also famous for the Escolania, one of the oldest boys' choirs in Europe, whose voices fill the basilica at daily services and draw visitors from far afield. The setting is extraordinary: the monastery clings to the cliffs at around 720 metres, reached by rack railway and cable car, with hiking trails leading up to hermitages and viewpoints over the surrounding plains.

Still home to a living Benedictine community, Montserrat blends religious devotion, music, art and spectacular landscape. It remains both a major pilgrimage destination and a symbol of Catalan identity, drawing millions who come for the Madonna, the choir and the unforgettable mountain.
