Monastery of the Holy Trinity, Meteora

The Monastery of the Holy Trinity, or Agia Triada, clings to the summit of a sheer rock pillar rising more than 400 meters above the Pineios valley near Kalambaka, one of the most spectacular of the surviving Meteora monasteries. The Meteora, whose name means suspended in the air, once held some twenty-four monastic communities built atop these natural sandstone towers as refuges of prayer and protection.

Founded in the fifteenth century, the monastery was historically accessible only by removable ladders or by nets and baskets hauled up by rope and windlass, a perilous ascent that preserved the monks' isolation for centuries. Today visitors reach it by climbing a long stone stairway carved into the rock. Its small frescoed catholicon and the breathtaking views from its terraces reward the effort.

The six remaining Meteora monasteries were collectively inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988, recognized for both their natural setting and their living Orthodox monastic tradition. The Holy Trinity gained wider fame as a filming location for the 1981 James Bond film For Your Eyes Only, yet it remains an active monastery devoted to the contemplative life.
