Holy Saviour of the World Cathedral, Olinda (Catedral da Sé)

The Holy Saviour of the World Cathedral, known locally as the Catedral da Sé or Sé de Olinda, crowns the Alto da Sé, the highest point of the colonial town of Olinda in Pernambuco. Its origins trace to a simple chapel built between 1537 and 1540, among the earliest Christian structures in Brazil. The mud-walled original was replaced by a more substantial temple in 1584, and the church was elevated to cathedral status in 1676 with the creation of the diocese.

Reshaped over the centuries, the cathedral today presents a sober whitewashed exterior typical of Pernambuco's colonial churches, with a luminous interior that has been restored to a clean, simplified form. It serves as the metropolitan cathedral of the Archdiocese of Olinda and Recife and holds the tomb of Dom Hélder Câmara, the influential archbishop remembered worldwide as a champion of the poor and of human rights during the 20th century.

Set within the Historic Centre of Olinda, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, the cathedral and its esplanade are among the most popular viewpoints in the Northeast, looking out over Olinda's red rooftops and churches toward the skyline of neighbouring Recife. Visitors climb the Alto da Sé to tour the cathedral, attend Mass, and enjoy the surrounding craft stalls and street life. As an active place of worship and a centrepiece of one of Brazil's best-preserved colonial townscapes, it remains a key destination for pilgrims and tourists alike.
