Hanging Church
The Church of the Virgin Mary, known as the Hanging Church (El Muallaqa), is one of the oldest churches in Egypt, its nave suspended over the gatehouse of the Roman fortress of Babylon. A centre of Coptic Orthodox Christianity for over a thousand years, it is renowned for its wooden coffered ceiling shaped like Noah's Ark and its collection of ancient icons.
