Gniezno Cathedral
Gniezno Cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, stands on Lech Hill at the cradle of the Polish state. The present soaring Brick Gothic church was raised in the 14th century atop earlier Romanesque and pre-Romanesque sanctuaries. As the seat of the Archbishop of Gniezno, Primate of Poland, it has been a center of Polish Catholicism for nearly a thousand years and is honored as the country's primatial cathedral.
The cathedral is bound up with Polish nationhood. It was here that Boleslaw the Brave was crowned the first King of Poland in 1025, and several monarchs were crowned in Gniezno through Przemysl II in 1295. The church is also the national shrine of St. Adalbert, the missionary bishop martyred in 997, whose relics rest in an elaborate silver Baroque reliquary coffin from 1662, borne aloft by allegorical figures at the center of the nave.
Gniezno's most celebrated treasure is the pair of bronze Gniezno Doors, cast around 1175. Their eighteen relief panels narrate the life and martyrdom of St. Adalbert in vivid Romanesque detail, ranking them among the finest medieval bronze works in Europe. Together with the cathedral's Gothic chapels and royal associations, the doors make Gniezno an essential monument of Polish religious and political heritage, drawing pilgrims and visitors to the historic heart of Wielkopolska.
