Frauenkirche (Munich)

The Frauenkirche, formally the Cathedral of Our Dear Lady, is the seat of the Archbishop of Munich and Freising and the defining landmark of the Bavarian capital. Built of red brick in a remarkably short twenty years between 1468 and 1488, its austere late-Gothic mass is crowned by two towers whose distinctive copper onion domes, added in 1525, can be seen across the city, protected by a local rule that forbids buildings from rising higher.

The vast, light-filled interior is a single great hall, in fact the largest hall church in the world, its slender octagonal columns creating an optical trick: from the entrance the side windows vanish from view, the so-called Teufelstritt or "Devil's Footstep" being woven into local legend. The church holds the imposing tomb of Emperor Louis IV the Bavarian.

Severely damaged in World War II air raids, the Frauenkirche was painstakingly restored in the decades that followed, and its silhouette remains so emblematic that it appears on Munich's logos and souvenirs. Pope Benedict XVI served as archbishop here before his election, deepening the cathedral's place in the city's identity.
