Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Beijing
The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, known as the Nantang or South Cathedral, stands on the site where the pioneering Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci built a chapel in 1605, making it the oldest Catholic church in Beijing. The present Baroque-influenced building dates from 1904, rebuilt after fire and the destruction of the Boxer Uprising.
As the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Beijing, it has long been the focal point of Catholic life in the capital and a place where the meeting of Chinese and European traditions is felt in stone and liturgy.
