Cathedral of Maringá (Catedral Basílica Menor Nossa Senhora da Glória)
The Cathedral of Maringá, officially the Catedral Basílica Menor Nossa Senhora da Glória, is a Roman Catholic cathedral and minor basilica in the planned city of Maringá in northern Paraná, southern Brazil. Soaring 124 metres (407 feet), it is the tallest church building in the Americas and ranks among the tallest in the world. Its dramatic conical silhouette dominates the skyline of the young, tree-lined city.
The cathedral was designed by architect José Augusto Bellucci, whose modernist, rocket-like form is often said to have been inspired by the Soviet Sputnik satellites of the late 1950s. The foundation stone, a piece of marble from Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome blessed by Pope Pius XII, was laid on 15 August 1958, and the building was completed in 1972. The slender concrete spire encloses a cylindrical sanctuary that seats around 4,500 worshippers beneath its steep walls.
Dedicated to Our Lady of Glory, the cathedral is the seat of the Archdiocese of Maringá and the religious heart of one of Brazil's most prosperous agricultural regions. Its bold engineering and height have made it a symbol of the city and a regional landmark in the South, attracting both pilgrims and architecture enthusiasts. Visitors come to attend Mass, admire the striking modernist structure inside and out, and appreciate a building that fuses 20th-century engineering ambition with Catholic devotion.
