Berlin Cathedral
Berlin Cathedral, officially the Evangelical Supreme Parish and Collegiate Church, is the grandest Protestant church in the German capital, looming over the Lustgarten on Museum Island. Despite its imperial scale and the name "Dom," it has never been the seat of a bishop; it served instead as the court church of the Hohenzollern dynasty, whose elaborate sarcophagi fill the crypt below in one of the most important dynastic tombs in Europe.
The present building, an exuberant blend of High Renaissance and Baroque Revival completed in 1905 under Kaiser Wilhelm II, replaced earlier, plainer churches on the site. Its great copper dome rises nearly 100 metres, and the interior dazzles with marble, gilding, mosaics and a monumental Sauer organ, while a climb up the dome gallery offers panoramic views over the heart of Berlin.
The cathedral was gutted by wartime bombing and stood damaged through the decades of the GDR, when it sat just east of the Berlin Wall. A long restoration, completed after reunification, returned it to glory, and it now stands again as a place of worship, concert venue and one of Berlin's most photographed monuments.
