Basilica of Superga
The Basilica of Superga is a Baroque church set atop the Superga hill east of Turin, commanding sweeping views over the city and the Alps. It was commissioned by Duke Victor Amadeus II of Savoy in fulfillment of a vow made during the 1706 Siege of Turin, and built between 1717 and 1731 to a design by the architect Filippo Juvarra.
The basilica is a refined example of late Baroque architecture, with a tall drum-and-dome silhouette, a deep classical portico and flanking bell towers that make it a defining landmark of the Turin skyline. Beneath the church lie the Royal Crypt and tombs of the House of Savoy, where many kings, princes and members of the royal family are buried, giving the basilica a central place in the dynastic history of the Italian monarchy.
Superga is also remembered for the 1949 air disaster in which a plane carrying the celebrated Torino football team crashed into the rear of the basilica, killing the entire squad; a memorial there is still visited by fans. Combining royal mausoleum, architectural masterpiece and panoramic pilgrimage destination, it remains one of the most evocative sites around Turin.
