Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré
The Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre stands on the north shore of the Saint Lawrence River about 30 kilometres east of Quebec City, on a site that has welcomed pilgrims since 1658. Dedicated to Saint Anne, the mother of the Virgin Mary and patroness of Quebec and of sailors, it is one of Canada's national shrines and among the oldest and most important pilgrimage destinations in North America. The present church replaced an earlier basilica destroyed by fire in 1922.
Designed in a French neo-Romanesque style by architects including Maxime Roisin and Louis N. Audet, the current basilica was built largely between 1923 and 1946. Its twin spires rise about 91 metres, and the luminous interior is celebrated for its mosaics, hundreds of stained-glass windows, carved capitals, and a vaulted ceiling. A revered statue of Saint Anne and a relic, traditionally a fragment of her forearm, are focal points of veneration, and the columns near the entrance display crutches and braces left by pilgrims who reported being healed.
Cared for by the Redemptorist congregation, the shrine draws around half a million pilgrims and visitors each year, with the feast of Saint Anne on 26 July marking its principal celebration. Surrounding the basilica are a Scala Sancta, the Way of the Cross with life-size bronze figures, a museum, and a memorial chapel, together forming a sprawling devotional complex that has shaped Catholic life in Quebec for centuries.
